Lance Corporal Maxwell Lockhart

 

Maxwell Lockhart was born on 16 April 1893 at Kilmonaghan, Mullaghglass, County Armagh, the first of four children of farmer Edward Wolfenden Lockhart and his wife Mary Anne (nee Porter). By 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings and working on the family farm.

Lockhart enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 16 November and 28 December 1911 (No.645 – later Corps of Hussars No.71054). He embarked for France on 17 August 1914 with A Squadron, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

He remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 11 February 1919 he was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

In 1924 Lockhart emigrated to Canada. He died in Ontario on 20 April 1958 and was buried in the Morpeth Cemetery.
